Integrating robotics into Moncton’s waste management system: a smart sustainable city approach

Halima Suleiman, Sergio Silva Ribeiro

Resumo

The increase in population across urban regions has posed significant challenges to efficient solid waste management practices worldwide. Moncton, New Brunswick, is an example of a growing Canadian city that has struggled with similar issues despite having a waste collection system in place. The need for new solutions arises from inconsistent public compliance, labor shortages, and greenhouse gas emissions. This research aims to explore the integration of robots, also known as cobots, into Moncton’s waste management process as part of its transition toward becoming a smart and sustainable city. It also examines the use of collaborative robots powered by artificial intelligence to improve sorting processes, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce environmental contamination. The PRISMA framework provides a qualitative case study approach for identifying stages suitable for robotic automation. This research demonstrates that robotic waste sorting is both practicable and feasible, and it is essential for achieving Moncton’s Energy and Emissions Plan targets.
